Cash Following Dream In The Great White North

Alan Micael Cash/The Canadian Press

The Montreal Alouettes are tied for first place in the Eastern Division of the Canadian Football League and have clinched a playoff spot with four games left in the season. One reason for the success this season is a resurgent defense featuring first year player Alan Michael Cash. The former North Carolina State University defensive tackle the season has recorded 23 tackles and 6 sacks which ties him for the team lead with teammate LB Shea Emry. Also his 6 sacks are remarkable accomplishment for a defensive tackle and place him 4th in the CFL for sacks. This is Cash’s first season with the team after being in camp with the Alouettes last year, and also Cash didn’t even show up on Montreal’s 46-man roster until Week 5 vs. the Argonauts.  Cash played 4 seasons at N.C. State from 2006-2009 for head coach Tom O’Brien and finished his career with 149 tackles and nine sacks.

Andre Brown Gets First Start (Giants vs Panthers)

Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images

The NFL Network Thursday Night Football game this week will feature the New York Giants vs. Carolina Panthers. The Panthers got their first win of the season last week against the New Orleans Saints behind a stout rushing attack led by QB Cameron Newton. The Giants defensive line including former NC State DT Markus Kuhn will have the responsibility of trying to stop Carolina’s vaunted running game. The Panthers’ defense is led by LB Jon Beson and will try to stop a Giants’ offense that exploded in the second half of their victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Giants’ offense will be without several starters (RB Ahmed Bradshaw, WR Hakeem Nicks, OT David Diehl), but they will still have the leadership of Eli Manning and WR Victor Cruz. To counter the running game of the Panthers the G-men will rely on their own rushing attack that will feature former Wolfpack players OT Sean Locklear and RB Andre Brown. Brown will get his first NFL start after a breakout performance last week helping the team achieve their first win of the season. The winner of this NFC contest could have an advantage when it comes to playoff positioning at the end of the season.

Andre Brown Comes Through

RB Andre Brown/Rich Kane/Icon SMI

The New York Giants found themselves down 14 points to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers heading into the fourth quarter and without starting running back Ahmed Bradshaw, who went down in the second quarter with a neck injury. The coaches turned to reserve running back Andre Brown. The running back responded by delivering 13 carries for 71 yards, a touchdown, and a two point conversion. Brown’s touchdown was the game winner coming with 31 seconds left in the game. Andre was originally a fourth round draft pick out of North Carolina State University by the Giants in 2009. Brown has bounced around the league to four different teams (Broncos, Colts, Panthers, and Redskins) before returning to the Giants in 2011. Brown spent last season on the practice squad and earned a Super Bowl ring as the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl. At the beginning of the year there were question on whether Brown would even make the 53 man roster, since making the team he has been a solid contributor on special teams.

NFL Week 2 Preview

Let’s look at former players that will be in action during week 2 of the NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills – After an embarrassing loss in week one DE Mario Williams and the Buffalo Bills look to erase those memories and bounce back in week 2. Williams and the defense will have to make some big plays if they want to defeat the Chiefs. WR T. J. Graham will see if he will see the first regular season action.

Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals – Both teams are coming into this game searching for their first win of the season. For the Bengals to get that first win LB Manny Lawson and the rest of the defense will need to pressure rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden into making mistakes.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Indianapolis Colts – The Vikings look to continue the momentum off a week 1 victory. The Minnesota defense has to try and confuse rookie QB Andrew Luck and LB Audie Cole looks for his first action of the season.

Arizona Cardinals vs. New England Patriots – The Patriots look like the Patriots of the Super Bowl years with a dominating performance in a week 1 win. Safety Adrian Wilson and the Cardinals defense has to slow down QB Tom Brady and the high powered New England offense if they hope to go to 2-0.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New York Giants – OG Ted Larsen and the Buccaneers will try to reach 2-0 taking advantage of a Giants team trying to rebound from a loss to divisional foe Dallas Cowboys. Now OT Sean Locklear and RB Andre Brown have to help QB Eli Manning get the Giants’ offense firing on all cylinders to avoid a 0-2 start. DT Markus Kuhn and the defensive line have to shut down the Tampa Bay rushing attack and make them one dimensional.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Seattle Seahawks – Rookie QB Russell Wilson had a good game last week but if the team hopes to defeat the Cowboys Wilson will have to play better this week. Rookie OG J.R. Sweezy need to help Wilson by slowing down the Dallas pass rush giving him time to find his receivers.

New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – The Jets looked impressive during a week 1 victory while the Steelers struggled on both sides of the ball in a loss last week. WR Jerricho Cotchery will help QB Ben Roethlisberger get the offense on track with the Jets’ All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis out for the game.

Tennessee Titans vs. San Diego Chargers – The Titans really struggled on offense last week in an opening season loss. OG Leroy Harris and the Titan’s offensive line have to protect QB Jake Locker to help him feel more comfortable in the pocket. QB Philip Rivers played well in a week 1 victory. Rivers will try to continue and improve on his week 1 performance and get the Bolts off to a 2-0 start.

Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers – Both teams enter the game coming of week 1 wins. For the Lions to continue their winning ways LB Stephen Tulloch and DE Willie Young has to shut down the 49ers’ running game and force QB Alex Smith to beat them.

Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons – Monday Night football has the high profile matchup of QB Peyton Manning against QB Matt Ryan. Both players looked good in week 1 leading their teams to victory. Linebacker Nate Irving along with the rest of the Broncos’ defense will try to get after Matt Ryan.

Packers And Bears Preview

Photo by Matt Becker/Green Bay Packers.

Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers – Tonight the NFL oldest rivalry will be rekindled at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers enters the game tonight 0-1 after a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in week one. The Bears come into the game with momentum after an easy win over the Indianapolis Colts. This is huge game for both teams the Bears have a chance to send a division rival off with a 0-2 start, and for the Packers it’s imperative for them to avoid the 0-2 start if they want to make the playoffs. Of the 68 teams that started 0-2 since the 2000 season only six made the playoffs. Since the NFL went to the 16-game format in 1978 only 27 teams have made the playoffs. The matchup everyone will be watching is the Bears’ QB Jay Cutler going up against the Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. But the Packers defense and special teams will have to outperform those of the Chicago Bears if they wish to avoid the 0-2 start. Look for Terrell Manning to see action during tonight’s game especially on the special teams. Manning played a big role in the week one matchup with a controversial block on a 78 yard punt return for a touchdown. The game will air tonight at 8pm on the NFL Network.

A Wolfpack Preview Of Week One Of The NFL

The NFL season gets underway this weekend with a full slate of games on Sunday and with Monday Night Football getting started. Here is a quick look at the games this weekend with former NC State football players involved.

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets – In this AFC East showdown defensive end Mario Williams will try to regain his All-Pro form after missing most of last season with an injury after coming over from the Houston Texans. Rookie T.J. Graham in his first NFL game will look to get in the game and use his speed to provide a deep ball threat for quarterback Ryan Fitapatrick.

Stephen Tulloch
St Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions – The Lions will have two former Pack players contributing to their defense in this contest. Starting middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch is a leader and quarterback of the defense. Defensive end Willie young will look to continue his impressive play in the preseason in this first game.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Minnesota Vikings – Seventh round draft pick inside linebacker Audie Cole not only made the roster, but has positioned himself as second team middle linebacker behind Jasper Brinkley. Cole could see some action on defense and on special teams.

New England Patriots vs. Tennessee Titans – The Titans offensive line will be anchored by starting right guard Leroy Harris. The sixth year pro has played all the offensive line positions during his career with the Titans.

San Fransisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers – Rookie linebacker Terrell Manning who played outside linebacker while at NC State made the roster as the reserve middle linebacker. Look for Manning to see most of his playing time on special teams.

Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Buccaneers will start a new era under new head coach Greg Schiano and with offensive lineman Ted Larsen moving into the starting lineup. Larsen a third year pro will be the starting right guard when Tampa Bay faces off against division rival Carolina Panthers.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos – For the Steelers nine year veteran wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery will provide veteran leadership to a young receiving corps while the team adjusts to first year offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s scheme.  Second year reserve linebacker Nate Irving for the Broncos looks for his playing time to increase after seeing action all sixteen games last season.

Philip Rivers
Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens – Veteran outside linebacker Manny Lawson enters his second season with the Bengals. Lawson will provide leadership to the young upstart team.

San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders – Quarterback Philip Rivers look to bounce back from a subpar season last year and return to his Pro Bowl form. Rivers will be helped by the return of his favorite target tight end Antonio Gates.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals – The Seahawks will start the season with rookie Russell Wilson at quarterback. Wilson might not possess the ideal height for a pro quarterback but his maturity, accuracy, and athleticism more than makes up for his lack of size. Wilson will not be the only rookie starting for the Seahawks rookie J.R. Sweezy will start at right guard. Sweezy a defensive tackle in college has made the transition to offensive lineman successfully. Kicker Steven Hauschka handles the kickoff, extra point, and field goal duties for the Seahawks. The Cardinals looking to get back to their Super Bowl form or the 2008-09 season will lean on the leadership of starting safety Adrian Wilson. Wilson entering his twelfth year in the league will look to show he has not lost a step and he is still a playmaker.

Russell Wilson To Start For Seattle This Friday

Rumors gushed out of Seattle this morning, and then were confirmed by Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll, that Russell Wilson would start for the team this Friday night against Kansas City.

The team drafted Wilson to compete against Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback. Jackson has since fallen by the wayside and is being shopped around in a potential trade. Flynn backed up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and signed with Seattle during the offseason.

Wilson through the first two games of the Preseason has been impressive. He has gone 22-of-31 for 279 yards and three touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He outplayed Flynn, who started, during those games, albeit against defensive reserves.

The decision to start Wilson in Week 3 of the Preseason is an interesting one. Teams normally use Week 3 as a dress-rehearsal for a regular season game. As opposed to the first two and last game of the Preseason, teams will gameplan for their opponent, and the starters will usually play three quarters.

Wilson will get a lot of playing time this week with the starters on offense and the Chiefs defense. He will have the chance to earn the starting job for Seattle this Friday.

NC State Players in Saturday Preseason Games

While checking in on Saturday night NFL preseason games here are some former North Carolina State University players to watch.
New York Giants vs. New York Jets – In this game watch for former Wolfpack players’ running back Andre Brown and defensive tackle Markus Kuhn to get into the game for the Giants in the second half. Andre Brown, who spent last year on the Giant’s practice squad, will try to make the most of his carries in his uphill battle to make the roster. Markus Kuhn continues to try to improve a crack the Giants’ deep defensive tackle rotation.
Washington Redskins vs. Chicago Bears – The Bears have two former NC State defensive linemen in DeMario Pressley and John McCargo suiting up tonight. McCargo, a former first round selection by the Buffalo Bills, along with Pressley are fighting for roster spots and will have to make the most of every snap they get in the game tonight.

Kuhn And Sweezy Selected

Markus Kuhn

In the seventh round of the NFL Draft the Wolfpack had two defensive linemen selected. First defensive tackle J.R. Sweezy was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 18th pick, 225th overall, in the seventh round.
The 6’5” 298lbs senior defensive tackle missed the first four games of the seasons because of a fractured foot and finished the season with 26 tackles, 6 tackles for losses, and 3 sacks.
Also defensive tackle Markus Kuhn was drafted by the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants with the 32nd pick of the seventh round, 239th overall.
Kuhn a 6’4” 299lbs defensive tackle from Germany finished his senior season with 45 tackles, 9.5 tackles for losses, and 4.5 sacks.
Both players are joining teams that currently have former Wolfpack players on their rosters. Sweezy will have a chance to play with placekicker Steven Hauschka and former teammate quarterback Russell Wilson in Seattle. Kuhn will join running back Andre Brown in New York.

Manning To The Packers

On Saturday Terrell Manning’s long wait came to an end when the linebacker was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 28th pick of the fifth round and the 163rd overall.
The Packers actually had to trade up in the draft to acquire Manning with the 163rd overall selection. They gave away a sixth-round pick and two seventh-round picks in a trade with the New England Patriots.
Manning a 6’3” 237 lbs junior linebacker, who gave up his last year of collegiate eligibility to enter the draft, was a second team All-ACC selection, had 76 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and led the Wolfpack with 12.5 tackles for losses in his final season despite missing three games with a knee injury.
While Manning had to wait awhile to finally hear his name the bright spot is he going to the Green Bay Packers one of the most historic and best run organizations in the NFL.

First Pack Player Picked

The first NC State player came off the draft board Friday when the Buffalo Bills drafted wide receiver T.J. Graham. The Bills selected Graham with the sixth pick, sixty-ninth overall, in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft.
Most draft experts had the speedy 5’11” 188 lbs former Wolpack receiver predicted to go in the later rounds of the draft. NFL.com and NFL network draft expert Mike Mayock thought Graham would go in the seventh round.
The Bills drafted Graham to give them a speed receiver to play opposite wide receiver Stevie Johnson, and also Graham who was an excellent return man in college will greatly help the Bills out on special teams. An added perk for Graham getting drafted by the Bills is he will get to be a teammate with former Wolfpack players defensive end Mario Williams, number one overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, and guard Jake Vermiglio.

Cole Not Nervous

NC State Senior Day - PackPride
Audie Cole knows that he will hear his name sometime this weekend during the NFL draft. While he is sure it will not be Thursday night during the first round of the draft, most draft experts predict Cole to go between the fourth and sixth rounds, but the former Wolfpack standout says he is not worried about the process.
The 6’4” 246 lbs. inside linebacker prospect will be spending the draft with his family in Monroe, Michigan and preferably fishing on his grandfather’s boat. Even though Cole will not be in New York for the draft he did get a chance to go to New York recently.
ESPN The Magazine took Cole and three other prospects to New York for a fashion shoot that appears in the current issue of the magazine. Cole looks forward to the new challenges the NFL will present and working hard for whichever team drafts him.

Wilson Ready For Next Chapter

Russell Wilson at NC State open practice
With the NFL draft occurring this evening one of the intriguing prospects will be quarterback Russell Wilson, Wilson took time out from preparing for the draft to attend the NC State open practice held prior to the annual Kay Yow spring game. This was Wilson’s first time back on campus since he transferred to Wisconsin after playing his first three collegiate seasons for the Wolfpack. He had an opportunity to reconnect with former teammates and coaches including head coach Tom O’Brien.  When asked about being back in Raleigh and seeing Coach Wilson said "

He's a great coach, a good individual. It's good to be here. He's coached me. I've got my foundation from North Carolina State University in terms of academics and in football. I want to have the access to be able to come back. It's a great place and not too far away from home.”
At the combine Wilson measured at 5’11”, 204 lbs, and ran a 4.55 second forty yard dash and is projected to go in either the third or fourth round. His final year in college Wilson led the nation is passing efficiency throwing for 33 touchdowns and completing 78.5 percent of his passes. Many draft experts believe that if he was a few inches taller Wilson would be a sure high first round pick. When asked about the draft Wilson said
"I visited the Buffalo Bills. I've talked to and visited the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts. The Philadelphia Eagles have worked me out. I've talked to a lot of teams though,"
Wilson will be excited no matter which team drafts him this weekend and now its just wait and see.

NC State Pro Day Results

North Carolina State held their pro day on March 21 and with about 26 NFL teams represented. The player at the pro day that probably helped his draft status the most was senior tight end George Bryan. Since his last game with the Wolfpack not only has Bryan earned his degree but has also drastically changed his body. Since playing in the  Belk Bowl Bryan has worked at the Athletes Performance Institute where he went from 276 pounds to 256 pounds, and while decreasing his body fat from 22 percent to 15 percent.

Bryan also improved his measurables he posted while participating in the East –West Shrine All Star game. His time in the 40 yard dash improved from 5.2 seconds to 4.9 seconds. He also improved on his vertical leap going from 29 inches to 33½ inches and his bench press from 7 reps to 13 reps. The biggest questions concerning Bryan was his speed and strength as a blocker he hope he answered those questions with his performance at the pro day.

Here’s how some of the more notable prospects performed:

Audie Cole: LB (6-foot-4 3/8, 248 pounds) — Ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 and 4.81 seconds and performed well in position drills.

J.R. Sweezy: DT (6-4 7/8, 296) — Ran the 40 in 4.84 seconds and did 18 reps on the bench press. Sweezy also participated in position drills.

Terrell Manning: LB (6-1 7/8, 235) — Ran the 40 in 4.71 seconds and stood on his numbers from the combine. Terrell had a good performance in position drills.

T.J. Graham: WR (5-11 3/8, 185) — Had a 34-inch vertical and 9-foot-11-inch broad jump and had good workout.

Markus Kuhn: DT (6-4 3/4, 297) — Stood on his combine performance, but did position drills.

Wolfpack Pro Day

From: gopack.com
Today is North Carolina State University’s Pro Day where NFL scouts and coaches will come to Raleigh, NC to watch Wolfpack seniors and other draft prospects workout. Players such as J.R. Sweezy, Markus Kuhn, Audie Cole, Terrell Manning, T.J. Graham,Curtis Underwood, Steven Howard, Jay Smith, Taylor Gentry, and Dwayne Maddox will run the 40 yd dash and go through drills in hopes of solidifying or improving their spot in the NFL Draft. This pro day is probably most important to senior tight end George Bryan. NFLDraftScout.com has Bryan currently the 9th ranked tight end in the draft and projected as a 5th round draft choice.
Coming into the season senior tight end George Bryan was the most highly regarded Pack player as a pro prospect, but in a surprising decision Bryan was not invited to the NFL combine. The 6’5” 265 lbs tight end finished his career at North Carolina State University with 126 reception, 1323 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns. The 126 receptions rank him 1st all-time for tight ends and 7th overall all-time; the 17 touchdown receptions rank him 1st for tight ends and 4th all-time in NC State history. Even though Bryan had a subpar year by his standards he was stilled named 2nd All-ACC selection and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game. Since then Bryan has been training at Athletes Performance, a training facility that helps athletes with nutrition and performance training. Toady Bryan will look to improve his NFL draft stock himself as a draft prospect.
